Reflection on World lit. Semester 1

This semester in World Literature has taught me about and reiterated the importance of world connectivity. I have become more aware of the problems globally and how certain issues and concerns are shared by the world. Just because my life is very different that someone who lives in the  slums of India might share the same concerns as me even though out lives are very different. I've also learned about the cry of the human heart, not just the  American heart. I've learned how religion and disorder in society are things that connect the world in some way. My religious beliefs could be the same as someone across the ocean and all the religions connect to each other because they all address a problem. Even though I may not agree with someone's life choices or religious beliefs, I now can understand the motive behind it and realize that their choices, although different from mine, are valid and important to them.I have learned this semester that the world is united but doesn't always see it. We are all fighting for a common cause but don't always see it and that's why society is starting to break down. This picture represents world literature because even though we all have different backgrounds at the end of the day we all live on the same world and have to get along.

"If you realize what the real problem is-losing yourself, giving yourself to some higher end, or to another-you realize that this itself is the ultimate trial. When we quit thinking primarily about ourselves and our own self-preservation, we undergo a truly heroic transformation of consciousness" (126 Campbell). What makes religion effective is based in on the fact that you believe not what yo believe. The thing that changes people is the giving one oneself to a higher cause and transforming yourself even when it's hard because you have an ultimate goal in mind.
"Those who are more thrifty(as I must confess the times require) may flay the carcass; the skin of which artificially dressed will make admirable gloves for ladies, and summer boots for fine gentlemen" (3 Swift). Not only does Swift suggest that they kill innocent children but now that they use them as clothes. By making clothes out of the carcasses, the dead children will now benefit people by clothing them. This says something about society, like the fact that we use the suffering of others to benefit ourselves.

. “He found himself understanding the wearisomeness of this life, where the path was an improvisation and a considerable part of one’s walking life was spent watching one’s feet” (76 Golding). People may never fully understand humanity. They can try to understand the past why thing were like that but it is difficult to analyze your current situation and live it at the same time. Most of your life is spent watching the path instead of watching what's to come.

Culture

 Culture

Culture is the collection of someone's or a group of peoples' individual or collective beliefs, ideas, values, and morals. It can also explain the common way of dressing or the common possessions own by a person or group of people. Different cultural groups can exist in a single country at a time or could be in different places and just bond over their similarities.
Culture of Country
This shows the blending of people in the U.S
The culture of the United States is a mixture of different people and ideas. There is all different ethnicities and religions all over the U.S. There is pockets of people that are alike and therefore they live together is their own region but are still in the U.S. The United States has influenced me because it's not all the same everywhere you go. I have met people who are different than me in either religion, race, or both. This has helped be more open minded.

Culture of State
The culture of Missouri varies. Some places are rural while others are urban. There is both farming life and city life. People tend to have big to medium families in the farms and smaller ones in the city. In some places, like Branson, St. Louis and Kansas City, life is very fast paced and people are always going places. It's less common for people to have big families and people tend to be more career oriented. This has influenced me because I'm used to being around people who have lots of siblings and live in the country and also I'm used to people having few siblings and living in the city.

Culture of town
Downtown Liberty
The culture of Liberty, Missouri didn't vary a whole lot. Most of the people that lived there were Caucasian and christian. There is mostly 3-4 kid families and both parents work. This influenced me because I am used to an area with people just like me and that's what I'm comfortable with. I'm not completely comfortable with racial or cultural diversity yet.

Culture of Family
In my family, we have both eastern and western religion

The culture of my family is a mixture of a lot of things. My parents are still married to each other. My family is a little different than most because of the fact that we are a split religion family. My dad is a christian and has been since my parents got married, my mom is a Buddhist but got married as a christian and just recently converted. This has influenced me because it's caused me to really reevaluate my beliefs and make a choice instead of just having "family religion"
This is like my school because people are separate

Culture of school
My school (Liberty North) was segregated. It was divided into specific groups and EVERYONE had to fit into a certain group, even if it was the 'loser' group. My school was also very focused on sports as apposed to education. This has influenced me because I always try to associate myself with a "group" instead of just being a free floater and not having a set group of friends. It also taught me that skills are sometimes more recognized then academic excellence.

Culture of friends
My best (and only "true") friend, Hunter is very open minded. He doesn't always agree with me but tries to listen to me anyway. He is accepting and tries to give everyone a chance to share their opinion. He is not perfect and doesn't claim to be. Being friends with him has influenced me by showing me that there is someone who loves me no matter what, even after they know everything about me. It's also taught me that I should never be too full of myself and to always keep learning from people
